Last season, the New Orleans Pelicans finished one spot behind the Mavericks (2-3) in the Western Conference standings, edging out Oklahoma City to claim the eighth and final playoff position in the process while finishing with a 45-37 record. Led by All-Star big man Anthony Davis, the Pelicans (0-5) have gotten off to a slow start but are once again expected to contend for a playoff spot this season under new head coach Alvin Gentry. With that said, the Mavs know they’ll face a daunting task Saturday night as the two teams meet at American Airlines Center to begin a split home-and-home series that concludes Tuesday night in New Orleans.
