Barely an hour into free agency, amid a torrent of tweets announcing contract agreements throughout the NBA, a Mavericks source sent an optimistic, albeit cryptic, text.
"It's been a good day."
By then the Mavericks had finalized a franchise-record $158 million contract agreement with restricted free agent Kristaps Porzingis, as well as a 3-year, $33 million extension for Dwight Powell starting in 2020-21.
Those moves, though, had been long expected, but obviously the source was hinting of other developments, which by Sunday evening began to crystalize.
Initially it was widely reported, including by The News, that the Mavericks had Goran Dragic as part of a three-way trade involving Philadelphia and Miami, in the Heat's attempt to work a sign-and-trade for Jimmy Butler.
