During his 10-year NBA career, DeAngelo Russell has had the sort of momentous highlights that you’d expect out of someone drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers with the No. 2 overall pick.
As recently as 2023, Russell had 31 points in a Game 6 close-out of Memphis in the first round of the playoffs. He also had 19 points in Game 6 to help shut the door on Golden State in the second round.
That recent production, plus his body of work as a former All-Star and a career 36.5 percent three-point shooter convinced the Mavericks that the 6-3 Russell is the man they need to bridge the gap at point guard until Kyrie Irving returns from knee surgery, perhaps in January or February.
