Mavs Free Agency Rumors Roundup For July 5th

What's the next step for the Dallas Mavericks with the first weekend of the 2015 NBA free agency period winding to a close? Find out in our Mavs Free Agency Rumors Roundup For July 5th.

Mavs Want Both JJ Barea And Jeremy Lin?

According to Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News, the Mavs are in "negotiations with guard J.J. Barea, who they want to keep. It also appears Jeremy Lin, who began his NBA journey on a Mavericks’ summer-league team, is in the Mavericks’ crosshairs. The problem is that all the Mavericks have to spend is the $2.8-million salary-cap exception and minimum contracts. They could create another $2.6-million if they were to waive point guard Raymond Felton under the stretch provision, where he is paid his final year’s salary over several years."

Felton's 2014-15 debut with the Mavs was held up by injury and a suspension, and he was a back-of-the-rotation piece when he returned. Dumping him off in hopes of landing a player with bigger upside in Lin might be a tact Mark Cuban and the front office consider.

What Could Have Been?

Before the Pacers agreed to ship off center Roy Hibbert to the Lakers on Saturday, the Mavs were reportedly being targeted as a facilitator for a three-way deal that would have shipped the big man off to the Clippers.

Per a Los Angeles Times report, "the Indiana Pacers engaged the Dallas Mavericks in discussions about a three-way sign-and-trade agreement that would potentially bring former All-Star center Roy Hibbert to the Clippers, a league executive told The Times on Saturday, though the Mavericks’ motivation to complete such a deal seemed doubtful."

What exactly the Mavs would have stood to gain from that deal remains a matter of conjecture, but it just feels like the Mavs have had their hands in every cookie jar they can find over the first five days of free agency.

Big Man Exchange?

The Mavs sent thousands of Clippers fans into collective depression earlier this week, signing DeAndre Jordan away from Dallas on a massive multi-year deal.

Now, as reported by Bleacher Report's Jared Zwerling, the Clippers are interested in Mavs free agent big Amar'e Stoudemire. Amar'e is close with Chris Paul, so it's possible he could take a discount to join a contender that he'd likely have a chance to start for.
