Dallas Mavericks Rumors: 5 Players The Mavs Should Use the MLE On In NBA Free Agency

The Dallas Mavericks will be able to use the mid-level exception in 2020 NBA free agency, and in today’s video, Jimmy Crowther of All Things Mavs will break down five different players the team could opt to use it on. The Mavs are fairly stacked at the point guard position for next season with Luka Doncic, Jalen Brunson and Delon Wright all set to return to the team, but if the Mavericks want to add a veteran scorer off the bench, DJ Augustin of the Orlando Magic might be a perfect fit. At the shooting guard position, the Mavs may need to get a defensive upgrade in their depth. Justin Holiday of the Indiana Pacers might not settle for the MLE this summer, but if he does, the Mavericks should take a good look at him.

The Mavericks biggest hole going into free agency is clearly their defensive wing depth. One player who might be able to help there is James Ennis of the Orlando Magic. Ennis didn’t shoot the ball very well during the 2019-20 season while spending time with the Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers, but he was still a steady defender wherever he went. The Mavericks have Kristaps Porzingis set to start at the power forward position, and if not him, then Dorian Finney-Smith, but if the Dallas Mavs opt to find one more offensive threat there, Dario Saric of the Phoenix Suns might make some sense.

The center position is likely the last place the Mavericks will need to look to upgrade at. With Kristaps Porzingis, Maxi Kleber, Boban Marjanovic, Dwight Powell and potentially Willie Cauley-Stein all coming back next season, there isn’t a lot of need here. However, it never hurts to add shooting. One of the best 3-point shooters from the five position this past season has been Meyers Leonard, formerly of the Portland Trail Blazers and now with the Miami Heat. He doesn’t add much defensively, but with Porzingis ready to protect the rim, Leonard can do what he does best and camp out around the 3-point arc and be ready to shoot when his number is called.
