Tony Romo Won't Go On Injured Reserve For Cowboys

When Tony Romo fracture his left collarbone for the second time this season against the Carolina Panthers on Thanksgiving Day, it was widely assumed that he would go on injured reserve and his season would be over. As it turns out, the Dallas Cowboys won't be placing Romo on IR.

The Cowboys want to keep Romo active in case they make a playoff run. That way, they can have Romo for the postseason.

The Cowboys are 3-8 and two games back of the NFC East leading Giants and Redskins. Of course, the Cowboys went 0-7 when Romo missed two months after he first broke his collarbone.

Romo suffered a hairline fracture against the Panthers, an injury less severe than his Week 2 one that resulted in seven fractures. The injury being a lesser one is part of the reason the Cowboys aren't shutting the door on his return.

"It's seven or eight fractures versus one," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "Is that a difference? Some say no and some say yes, to be honest with you. And I'm not a doctor."

The Cowboys will start Matt Cassel with Romo out. He completed 63 percent of his passes for 902 yards, five TDs and five picks in Romo's absence. Kellen Moore will likely be called up from the practice squad to serve as the backup.
