How Dak Prescott's Contract With Cowboys Is Impacted By The Patrick Mahomes Deal

Cowboys rumors around Dak Prescott are mostly quiet as the two sides wait to see who gives in. But with the Dallas Cowboys allowing another QB to get paid, have things gotten too far out of hand? Or can the Cowboys still get a contract done?

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are running out of time to get a contract extension done before the July 15 deadline for franchise tagged players. And things have been complicated by the Patrick Mahomes extension with the Chiefs. So what exactly is the impact of the Mahomes deal on Dak

Cowboys Report host Tom Downey thinks he has the max amount worth paying Dak on a 5-year contract. Since we KNOW that Dak is starting down $31.4 MM this year and $37.68 MM next year thanks to tags, on a hypothetical structure, you’re looking at $40 MM being the cut-off on a 5-year deal. And that falls in line with Mahomes making only about $40 million per year over his first 5 extension years.

With all that in mind, is the Mahomes deal a disaster for the Cowboys? It’s not ideal, but it’s not end of the world falling either. There’s some dispute there, but hopefully the Cowboys can get a Dak Prescott contract done. If not, he might not be the Cowboys QB in a few years.

Final contract numbers on Mahomes: It's a 10-year, $450 MM extension. With the 2 years Mahomes had left on his deal, it's 12-years at $477.6 million. Incentives can take the total money up to $502.6 million.
