Oh Where, Oh Where Can The Receivers Be?

Alex T: "Coach Garrett, it's your selection."

Jason: "I'll take Receiver Issues for $800, Alex."

Alex T: "Answer...Miles Austin and Dex Bryant."

Jason: "What are two bullet-less weapons?"

Alex T: "That's it....continue."

Jason: "Prayers for a $1000, Alex."

Alex T: "Jeopardy Answer is Hail Mary."

Jason: "What is.........

The Cowboys front office and coaching staff, mainly the offensive side of the ball, are desperately searching for answers as they've currently gotten themselves in WR jeopardy. The quandary started out as CB-oriented, but now it has flipped to the opposite side of the ball, and those entities the CB's are asked to cover are now the damaged goods. The injury loss of Miles Austin could haunt this team well into the Bye Week if not a little longer. If that weren't bad enough, the Cowboys continue saying their Hail Marys regarding the health and playing status of potential superstar Dez Bryant. With the way the Cowboys' offense is designed, going into contests without their #1 and #2 receivers is like having to play with a couple of arms strapped behind their back. To say #3, #4 and #5 have to "step up" is a gigantic understatement. If last week was Jesse Holley's coming out party, then this Monday is his Christening.

The Cowboys must be applauded for not panicking and doing something crazy with Week 3 just around the corner. There are free agents, some big name personnel, out on the streets, and two of them have "ties" to the organization. With Jerry's propensity and appetite for "star" pizazz, one might expect or assume a reach for either of these attention mongers might have transpired. Thankfully, neither has been spotted at Valley Ranch as of this writing. At stake would be chemistry and environment. In a single signing Jerry could wipe out everything Jason Garrett has created and is attempting to fortify. The last thing the Cowboys need is a proven Diva. They potentially have one of their own in the making, but that's a story for another day. A+ for patience as it relates to WR personnel.

No one can argue the talent possessed by these two future HOF receivers, but baggage would make the airlines rich, and there isn't enough space in the Dallas Theatre District for the amount of Drama that would accompany overly-large headaches. Transparent history is front and center with each, and potential moves like this are made in pure desperation, late in a season, when all other alternatives have been exhausted. Week #3 is not the time for the arrival of ticking time-bombs. Sure, Tony Romo could certainly use, especially with a banged-up rib cage, some proven commodities, but the short-term gain would amount to long-term disaster. The Cowboys just need to stick to their guns and ride with those currently comprising the roster. Quite simply, if #3, #4 and #5 can't get the job done or there is no confidence in any of them, then they have no business being part of the active 53-man roster.

Playing short-handed is never fun or ideal, but the Cowboys aren't the only team experiencing wounded personnel. Look around the League, it's everywhere. There is "no crying" in professional football. Embarking on Division Ball, and facing the first-place Division leader, it's "suck-it-up" time. Getting the young and inexperienced guys reps at this time of the year can only benefit the Cowboys in the long run. There are challenges every week in the NFL, but when you square-off under-manned, you find out about the mental toughness and overall compilation (talent and preparation) of the football team. These are golden opportunities for the lesser-known's to show their wears and demonstrate why they don the Cowboys' colors. There are no excuses at this level, just big and bright stage auditions and performances. Let's just hope and pray the Actor's Guild has selected the right people for the right parts.

Washington Redskins, enter stage right........
