Dallas Cowboys News: Cowboys release Will Allen, thin out already-depleted secondary

The Dallas Cowboys have released veteran safety Will Allen. Allen, who was recently replaced by rookie J.J. Wilcox in the starting lineup, had 17 tackles, two pass deflections and an interception in his five games for Dallas.

Allen was signed to a one-year contract as an unrestricted free agent back in March. He previously had spent three years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well and five seasons before that in Tampa Bay, where he worked with current Dallas defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

Dallas didn't immediately sign a player to fill Allen's spot on the 53-man roster. Allen's release is a notable vote of confidence in Wilcox, but the Cowboys are still very thin at the safety position and could sign a player from the practice squad to fill in temporarily. Jakar Hamilton and Micah Pellerin are the likely candidates - neither safety has NFL experience, but one could step in for Sunday's game against the Redskins if no better options materialize.
