Cowboys Rumors: $11 million a year too much for WR Dez Bryant?

It's been a rambunctious offseason in Cowboys rumors, with attentions now pointing at the possibility of extensions for some of the Dallas Cowboys' key players.

When asked if wide receiver Dez Bryant, currently on the last year of a five-year, $11.8 million contract, would be looking at a "Percy Harvin-type" extension if the Cowboys were to resign him today, ESPN Dallas Cowboys analyst Todd Archer wasn't so sure --

"That would put him around $11 million a year. That could be a possibility, but maybe a little high. The Seahawks were able to pay Percy Harvin a premium like that because they didn’t have money in a quarterback. What I’m more wondering about is the structure of the contract. I can see the Cowboys doing a deal with high base salaries for Bryant so he has to earn it every year, sort of like how they dealt with Terrell Owens' first deal."

The "money in a quarterback" conundrum that Archer is referring to is the six-year, $108 million deal for Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback Tony Romo which runs through 2019 and carries an astronomical $27.77 million cap hit for 2015.

While Archer is optimistic that Bryant, who posted a second-straight 1,000 receiving yard (1,233) and double-digit receiving touchdown (13) year in 2013, will get paid handsomely for his efforts -- he is still unsure if the Cowboys will have the means or the will to break the bank for the 2013 NFL Pro Bowler:

They will give Bryant a good bonus, but I’m not sure it will be enormous. I think they tie up his guarantees in the bases," Archer said. "Remember at the owners’ meetings Jerry Jones said Bryant has to keep his guard up, so that, to me, says there are some minor concerns at the very least."
