Cowboys News: Cowboys unlikely to sign free agent DE Jared Allen

With the Cowboys news today that the team has signed free agent defensive tackle Henry Melton, it is becoming increasingly unlikely that the Dallas Cowboys will sign the consensus top-rated defensive player left on the 2014 NFL free agent market.

Per Fox Sports 1 NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Dallas Cowboys' meeting with former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen today is not expected to result in the club signing the five-time Pro Bowler--

The signing of Henry Melton will most likely take up the remaining $7.5 million in cap space that the Dallas Cowboys had at today's outset. Jared Allen has made it very clear in interviews since his release from the Vikings that he will retire if what he views to be the right money is not offered to him.

2013 marked the seventh straight year, and the eighth out of nine, that Jared Allen has posted double-digit sacks (11.5) in a season. The four-time NFL All-Pro is just two years removed from posting 22 sacks during the 2011 campaign--just half a sack behind former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan's NFL record-setting total of 22.5 sacks back in 2000.
