What do you do when your stupendous gifts as a footballer are waning? In the case of Jimmy Greaves, you drive half a lap of the world.

It was 1970 and the goalscorer supreme had just been dropped, for the first time, from the Tottenham team by Bill Nicholson after a disappointing FA Cup defeat by Crystal Palace.

He also knew he would not be included in England’s squad for that year’s World Cup in Mexico.

So, aged 30, Greaves announced he would instead take part in the World Cup Rally, a 16,000-mile blast across the gravel, dust and Tarmac of 25 countries.
