Chief Inspector of Sussex police Simon Nelson has apologised to Crystal Palace supporters after claims 'knives and knuckledusters' were confiscated from fans allegedly trying to force their way into Brighton's stadium last month.

Six people were arrested and two people were taken to hospital in unsavoury scenes around the 0-0 draw on November 28 but police claims that weapons were taken off of fans have now been confirmed as untrue.

Following on from a statement issued by Sussex police on Thursday, Nelson tweeted: 'I personally add to this apology - the information regarding discarded weapons and pyros in the away end of the stadium was passed to us and believed to be true - this was clearly not the case.
