Crystal Palace make Dougie Freedman new sporting director as former player and manager takes up fresh role at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace have announced Dougie Freedman as their new sporting director.

The Scot had been understood to be in the running to take over at Hearts but has rejoined the club in which he has held almost every position.

Freedman played as a striker for the Eagles and also held the posts of manager and assistant.

Now he will work closely with Steve Parish and Frank de Boer in player recruitment and all football-based elements of the club.

Parish said: 'This is a position I have been looking to fill for a while, someone to work with the manager, myself and Head of Recruitment, Tim Coe on all the footballing aspects of the club.
