Considering the peculiar rivalry between Crystal Palace and Brighton, Patrick van Aanholt could be excused for running into trouble shortly after moving to Selhurst Park last year.
Less than three months after signing for Palace from Sunderland in a £9million deal in the January transfer window, van Aanholt joined in the congratulations when Brighton won promotion to the Premier League for the first time.
It was only when Palace fans pointed out he was backing their arch rivals that van Aanholt came to appreciate the bad blood between two clubs 45 miles apart that dates back to the mid-70s.
