Georgia Southern Fired Lunsford After 1-3 Start

Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Jared Benko announced Sunday that Chad Lunsford was fired from his job as the Eagles’ head coach. Under Lunsford the Eagles began the season 2021 1-3; they won their opener against FCS school Gardner-Webb but then lost three consecutive games to FAU, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Cornerbacks coach Kevin Whitley will serve as the interim head coach until Benko finds a long-term replacement. Whitley joined the Eagles in 2019 and was a standout player for them from 1988-91.

“After thorough review and evaluation of our football program,” Benko said Sunday via a press release, “I have made the decision that a change in leadership is in the best interest of our team and University.
