Although a matchup against last season’s MLS Cup Final runner-up was never going to be easy, it’s clear that a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of the Philadelphia Union was not what the Columbus Crew faithful anticipated to begin 2023. A few questionable penalty kick calls from center referee Lukasz Szpala and VAR Kevin Stott made the match a frustrating watch for fans.
