On January 14th, 2017, the Monsters inked former Notre Dame standout, Steven Summerhays, to a PTO contract. This signing came on the heels of an emergency of Forsberg which left the Monsters with one netminder, Thiessen. Forsberg was sent back to the Monsters the next day.
Summerhays started the 2016-17 season with the Tulsa Oilers of the ECHL. He was traded on December 12, 2016, alongside forward Ben Murphy for the Norfolk Admirals' Sam Noreau and the rights to forward Alexandre Ranger. Summerhays had a record of 1-2 with the Norfolk Admirals.

Summerhays spent his collegiate years calling the University of Notre Dame home.
