BETHESDA, MD. — Rockies infielder Garrett Hampson, 24, and reliever Yency Almonte, 25, weren’t sure what to expect when they walked through the doors of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Tuesday morning.

But after they watched amputees go through their paces during rehab, interacted with adults in the oncology ward and witnessed the brave spirit of ailing children, they were certain of a few things.

“We might be here uplifting them, but they do the same for us,” Hampson said.

“This was a lot to take in, and it just showed me that you have to take life in and appreciate every minute of it,” Almonte added.
