Umpire John Hirschbeck leaves Rockies game after getting hit with foul ball

CHICAGO — Umpire John Hirschbeck left Friday's Colorado Rockies-Chicago Cubs game in the eighth inning after he appeared to take a foul ball off his neck.

Hirschbeck was behind the plate when Colorado catcher Tony Wolters' foul ball bounced on the ground and came up and got Hirschbeck under his mask. He was attended to by the training staff, and initially stayed in the game as third base umpire Clint Fagan went inside to change into his home-plate gear.

But after Wolters reached on a fielder's choice and the Cubs made a pitching change, Hirschbeck was escorted off the field.
