Late Friday night at Coors Field, DJ LeMahieu dashed home from third, slid under catcher Willson Contreras’ tag, rolled onto his head, then popped to his feet and immediately gestured to the Rockies’ dugout.
Though home-plate umpire John Tumpane ruled LeMahieu out, the Rockies’ second baseman knew he was safe. Pumped up by the adrenaline of the big moment, LeMahieu made sure everyone in the house knew it too.
The call was reviewed and reversed, and LeMahieu’s run, coming off Nolan Arenado’s sacrifice fly to shallow left field, tied the game 5-5 in the eighth inning. The Rockies went on to beat the Cubs 7-6 in 11 innings in a wild, wet and weird game that took 5 hours, 57 minutes (counting a 2-hour, 10-minute rain delay).
