ATLANTA — When Rockies manager Bud Black contemplates whether a player has what it takes to be an effective base thief, he goes through a checklist.
Speed, instincts, acquired knowledge and guts are on this list. But most of all, the player must have the “want to.”
“With all base-stealers, there’s got to be a desire to go,” Black said. “There has got to be an ego to wanting to steal bases, there has to be an aggressiveness. If you don’t have that, you’re not going to be a good base-stealer.”
