Seeking veteran depth in its infield and a boost to its anemic offense, the Rockies signed shortstop Orlando Arcia to a major league deal on Wednesday.
In a corresponding move, the club optioned infielder Aaron Schunk to Triple-A Albuquerque.
“We are trying to get better,” general manager Bill Schmidt said. “Arcia gives us some versatility and he’ll be our utility infielder.”
Arcia is available for Colorado’s game against the Cubs on Wednesday night in Chicago.
Though Arcia is primarily a shortstop — and will play behind Ezequiel Tovar — Schmidt said Arcia can also play second and third.
