Rockies’ prospect Tyler Nevin plans to make his mark with more power, versatility

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Tyler Nevin looks the part.

Rigorous offseason workouts helped add muscle to his 6-foot-4 frame and he now weighs 225 pounds, the build of a power hitter. Nevin’s swing, in the words of fellow Rockies prospects Brendan Rodgers, is “power-packed.”

“I was shagging in the outfield for him down here in January,” Rodgers said Thursday. “He was constantly launching balls over batter’s eyes. Everyone was saying, ‘Man, you can tell he’s put on some good weight and he’s stronger.’ ”

A power surge could punch Nevin’s ticket to the majors, perhaps even late this year.
