Move over, Ubaldo. There’s a new strikeout artist in town.
Rockies right-hander German Marquez, just 23, struck out the first eight Philadelphia batters he faced Wednesday night to set a franchise records for strikeouts to begin a game, as well as strikeouts in a season.
Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez held the old record for strikeouts in a season, whiffing 214 in 2010.
Marquez entered the night with 210 strikeouts, tied with Pedro Astacio (1999) for second in franchise history. But Marquez quickly made history, striking out, in order: Cesar Hernandez, Carlos Santana, Odubel Herrera, Rhys Hoskins, Roman Quinn and Dylan Cozens.
