PHOENIX — Tim Melville began the season pitching for the Long Island Ducks, an independent team in the Atlantic League. Wednesday afternoon, the 29-year-old right-hander pitched the game of his life.

Called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to replace injured starter Jon Gray, Melville steered the Rockies to a 7-2 victory over Arizona at Chase Field. Melville pitched seven innings of two-hit baseball, striking out four and walking two. The only run he surrendered was a solo homer to Ketel Marte in the sixth.

Gray is out for the season. He was placed on the 60-day injured list Wednesday morning with a stress fracture in his left foot.
