Pirates sweep Rockies as Jeff Hoffman’s strong start is wasted, Colorado falls to season-worst 20 games below .500

For a few moments Sunday, promise reared its hardly-seen head at Coors Field.

Roller-coaster right-hander Jeff Hoffman turned in one of the best starts of his season. The Rockies’ defense, which hasn’t been up to snuff this year, saved a couple runs early. And one of the baseball’s best players, Nolan Arenado, stayed hot with his 35th home run.

But bad teams find new ways to lose, and Colorado did that again in a 6-2 loss to the Pirates that clinched a Pittsburgh sweep. This time, southpaw Steven Brault — a Regis University product — stymied Colorado with six-plus innings of two-run ball while also belting his first career homer.
