Brandon Belt launched a three-run homer during the inning. After the leadoff strikeout of Aaron Hill, the only other out was when Hunter Pence was erased at the plate on throws from left fielder Alexi Amarista and shortstop Trevor Story while trying to score from first on Buster Posey's double.
After Brandon Crawford, the eighth batter of the inning, singled, manager Bud Black and assistant athletic trainer Scott Gehret visited the mound, and Gray left the game shortly thereafter. He spent the remainder of the inning in the dugout, and talked to Black and Gehret on the bench, before walking to the clubhouse in the right-field corner at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.
