SAN FRANCISCO — German Marquez mastered the Giants Sunday afternoon.
The Rockies’ 24-year-old right-hander came five outs away from pitching a no-hitter against the Giants at Oracle Park. His bid for a unique place in history ended when Giants veteran third baseman Evan Longoria snaked a grounder between third baseman Nolan Arenado and shortstop Trevor Story with one out in the eighth.
Still, Marquez was pure magic in the Rockies’ 4-0 win. He allowed that lone hit, struck out nine, walked none and hit one batter en route to the first shutout of his career.
