COMMERCE CITY — In the five years since Sam Hamilton and Kortne Ford became teammates at the University of Denver, there have been plenty of special moments, including a Final Four appearance last year. But one of the most poignant experiences came last week when Ford scored his first MLS goal — a game-winner — and dedicated it to his mother who is fighting a difficult battle with cancer.
It was heartwarming for all in the stadium who knew Laurie Ford’s story — Kortne’s mother who was diagnosed this year with Stage 4 bone cancer, with the prognosis of a year to live — but none more than Hamilton.
