Ty Smilanic to the Avalanche? NHL mock draft has Colorado native staying in state.

The Avalanche’s next first-round pick could be someone from their own backyard.

The NHL draft doesn’t take place until June 26-27, but NHL.com staff writers Adam Kimelman, Mike G. Morreale and Guillaume Lepage shared their NHL mock drafts last month and Colorado sat at the 24th overall pick.

Kimelman selected 6-foot-1 Colorado native center Ty Smilanic, “Born in Elizabeth, Colorado, Smilanic works hard in all three zones and has developed a powerful shot he’s able to get off from anywhere in the offensive zone.”

Morreale had Canadian right wing Ozzy Wiesblatt: “The right-shot forward (5-10, 183) is a smart and tenacious player on the puck, quick to find openings and has excelled since moving to center from right wing earlier this season.
