Semyon Varlamov shelved through NHL All-Star break

Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov, after allowing five goals Tuesday in a 6-4 loss to the visiting Chicago Blackhawks, missed practice Wednesday with another groin-muscle issue and will be shut down through the Jan. 26-30 NHL All-Star break, coach Jared Bednar said.

The Avs were scheduled to depart for Anaheim on Wednesday afternoon, and minor-league goalie Spencer Martin is scheduled to meet the team in southern California and serve as Calvin Pickard‘s backup Thursday against the Ducks. Martin, 21, is expected to get a start during his latest call-up and make his NHL debut, Bednar said.
