Philipp Grubauer’s new mask mixes favorite theme with vintage feel

Goaltender Philipp Grubauer may be new to the Colorado Avalanche, but his mask design for the upcoming season is as familiar as it gets for fans of the German tender.

Grubauer’s lid was revealed by mask artist Dave Gunnarsson of DaveArt, who has worked with him since they first collaborated on a design in 2011.

Titled “The Desolation of Grubi, Volume 11”, the mask is a continuation of the mask series that Gunnarsson has been working on for Grubauer for years now—-and while none of the masks are quite the same, it’s a fantastically familiar feel for the new Avalanche backup:

Based on the team’s jersey and logo, this new design has a Rocky Mountain feel that replaces the Americana, flag-inspired designs that Grubauer wore in Washington.
