Jared Bednar: Avs’ Tyson Barrie has to earn trust facing opposing top lines

Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie was the only NHL player to go through a salary arbitration hearing in the offseason.

The other 24 scheduled for hearings signed contracts before the arbitrator got involved, and even Barrie agreed to a four-year, $22-million deal with the Avalanche between the end of the hearing and before arbitrator Elizabeth Neumeier hit “send” to transmit her ruling to those involved.

In the wake of the hearing and then the signing, the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Barrie repeatedly has said one of his goals is to be entrusted to be on the ice against opposition’s top lines.
