In an 82-game NHL season, a solid backup goalie typically gets 20-30 starts, and that number usually depends on how much work or rest the No. 1 goalie desires. For the Avalanche this season, it’s all up in the air for a variety of reasons.

Russian Semyon Varlamov, 28, is still Colorado’s No. 1 goalie but Calvin Pickard is a hungry Canadian World Championship gold medalist who has statistically outplayed Varlamov the past two seasons while bouncing back and forth from the minors.
