Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon won’t play in Calgary because of possible hand injury from Sunday’s fight

CALGARY, Alberta — Avalanche top-line center Nathan MacKinnon won’t play in Tuesday’s showdown against the Calgary Flames because of an upper-body injury, the team said.

MacKinnon, who returned to Denver to be further examined, could have sustained a hand injury from Sunday’s fight in Minnesota against Wild defenseman Matt Dumba.

“Possibly could be stemming from the fight,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said after the morning skate at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

When asked what level of concern the team has about the injury, Bednar said, “High.”

Newly acquired forward Artturi Lehkonen will make his debut with the Avs after a weeklong struggle with his immigration.
