Avalanche wears down Islanders’ Semyon Varlamov, scores four goals in third period for 5-4 win

NEW YORK — The Avalanche might have peppered goalie Semyon Varlamov to the point of exhaustion on Monday night at UBS Arena, and at the same time, the Avs might have exhausted themselves.

In Colorado’s first appearance at the New York Islanders’ new digs, former Avs goalie Semyon Varlamov stood strong through two periods, making 34 saves. But the NHL-leading Avs put 12 shots on Varlamov through the first 8:27 of the third period and scored four times, leading to a 5-4 victory over the Islanders to sweep the two-game series and snap a 0-1-1 winless skid.

The Islanders, trailing 5-1, scored the game’s final three goals, including the last one with Varlamov on the bench for a sixth attacker.
