Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon suffers injury at Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon suffered a lower-body injury in the second period of Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center.

Colorado was trailing 2-0 at the time and a team spokesman said MacKinnon — who leads the team and is fourth in the NHL with 93 points — was doubtful to return.

The Avs, who were completing a three-game Pacific Coast trip at L.A., are already without forwards Mikko Rantanen, Nazem Kadri, Andre Burakovsky and Matt Calvert, plus defenseman Cale Makar and goalie Philipp Grubauer. MacKinnon might join them on the injured list ahead of Wednesday’s home game against the New York Rangers.
