Avalanche signs ECHL agreement with Colorado Eagles

The Avalanche and Colorado Eagles of the ECHL announced an affiliation agreement Wednesday, allowing the Windsor-based Eagles to carry some Avalanche prospects who don’t play for the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League.

The ECHL — which formerly stood for the East Coast Hockey League before it expanded throughout the U.S. — is considered the double-A of hockey, a step below the AHL. The Avs’ previous ECHL affiliate was the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Komets.

“We are thrilled to finalize a partnership with the organization that truly put the sport of hockey on the map in the state of Colorado,” Eagles president and general manager Chris Stewart said in a news release.
