The Colorado Avalanche signed UMass sophomore Cale Makar to his standard three-year, entry-level contract (ELC) Sunday morning, less than 12 hours after the Minutemen lost to Minnesota-Duluth in the NCAA championship game in Buffalo, N.Y.

Before their Game 3 playoff series 3-2 overtime win against the Calgary Flames on Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Avs told The Denver Post they would immediately attempt to sign Makar after the NCAA title game.

The heralded 20-year-old defenseman traveled to Denver on Sunday and will participate in Monday’s morning skate ahead of Game 3 against the Calgary Flames at the Pepsi Center, according to a team spokesman.
