On Thursday morning, the San Diego Padres shocked the baseball world by acquiring All-Star closer Mason Miller and starting pitcher J.P. Sears from the Athletics in exchange for top prospect Leo De Vries and pitching prospects Braden Nett, Henry Baez and Eduarniel Nunez.

The A's are receiving shortstop Leodalis De Vries, the No. 3 overall prospect in baseball, along with three pitchers from San Diego for Mason Miller and J.P. Sears, sources tell ESPN.

It’s a trade that signifies a lot of things.

First off, it shows that the Padres (who entered Wednesday holding onto the final Wild Card spot in the National League) are once again serious about dethroning the Dodgers.
