Indians infielder Mike Aviles has been placed on the medical emergency list and utility man Zach Walters has been recalled from Triple-A, the team announced Friday.
Aviles can remain on the medical emergency list for 3-to-7 days. He is hitting .288 this season with two home runs and four RBI in 18 games.
The Indians did not disclose any details into Aviles’ situation other than to say he has their support.
“It’s a personal, family, very serious matter that we found out about [Thursday],” Francona said. “He certainly has our blessing—not only our blessing, but our assistance in taking care of what he needs to take care of.
