The Cleveland Indians recalled Jose Ramirez and placed utility man Mike Aviles on the Family Medical Emergency list yesterday. Back in May, the Tribe placed Aviles on this same list due to his daughter’s diagnosis with leukemia, and while the reason why Aviles has been placed on this list has not yet been announced, it very likely involved his daughter’s cancer.
Aviles, 34, currently owns a wRC+ of 88 and has performed at roughly replacement level this season. The Cleveland Indians acquired the utility man as part of the Yan Gomes trade, in which the Toronto Blue Jays acquired Esmil Rogers for Aviles and Gomes.
