Cleveland signs René Rivera to minor-league contract

Cleveland has signed veteran catcher René Rivera to a minor-league contract, according to the team’s insider Twitter account.

Rivera, 37, has spent the last two years in the New York Mets organization, where he accumulated 24 plate appearances over 11 major-league games and spent most of his time in the minors. The last time he saw significant playing time was with the Rays in 2015, when he slashed .178/.213/.275 with five home runs in 319 plate appearances.

He is the depth to Cleveland’s depth right now, as the team has Roberto Pérez and Austin Hedges in the majors, with Ryan Lavarnway as their third catcher at the alternate site.
