Cleveland Cavs: Top 5 Head Coaching Candidates As Of May 14th

The Cleveland Cavs are beginning their search for Mike Brown's replacement, with a bunch of interesting names starting to crop up in connection with the team's vacant head coaching position. We are here to keep you up-to-date on all the latest names cropping up in the Cavs rumor cycle as we present to you the Top 5 Cleveland Cavs Head Coaching Candidates As Of May 14th:

5. George Karl

Karl began his NBA head coaching career in Cleveland, posting two sub-.500 seasons with the club from 1984-86. Karl has proceeded to post just one sub-.500 season in his last 23 seasons as a head coach, with stops in Golden State, Seattle, Milwaukee, and Denver. Is Karl looking to return to where it all began? It's looking like it's at least a solid possibility.

4. Mike D'Antoni

Are the Cleveland Cavs willing to put a season's worth of defensive emphasis behind them, embracing the run-and-gun style that Mike D'Antoni is known for? The odds are against it at the present time, but D'Antoni's name value and previous success in Phoenix could make him a dark horse in this search -- especially if Cavs management believes that the only thing separating them from a playoff berth in a weak Eastern Conference is a revamped offensive philosophy.

3. Vinny Del Negro

Del Negro spent time as an assistant general manager during Cavs GM David Griffin's time with the Suns. Despite posting a winning record (210-184) in five seasons as Los Angeles Clippers head coach from 2008-13, perceived problems with his ability as a game-planner (and a lack of playoff success) led to his firing after the 2012-13 season. Is he ready to take over the challenge of rebuilding this Cavs squad? Griffin may think so...

2. Adrian Griffin

The Jazz have been granted permission to interview the coveted Chicago Bulls assistant coach, so the Cleveland Cavs would be wise to jump on interviewing Griffin before it's too late. Per Sam Amick of USA Today Sports, Griffin is still considered to be a "top candidate" for the Cavs' vacant head coaching slot -- as Griffin's past work as a longtime executive with the Phoenix Suns makes him a very attractive proposition for Cavs GM David Griffin.

1. Alvin Gentry

Gentry' reputation as a players' coach during his time as Phoenix Suns head coach proceeds him. Despite posting a winning record (145-116) with the Suns, Gentry was fired after being held responsible for a host of personnel mistakes that were out of his control. The Cleveland Cavs may provide the perfect environment for Gentry to get a legitimate second chance.
