Cavs vs. Hawks Game 1 Preview & Prediction

Both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks overcame 2-1 deficits against the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards, respectively, to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. Who will continue their hot streak and draw first blood in this series?

Projected Starting Lineups

G Jeff Teauge – 15.9 ppg, 7.0 apg

G Kyle Korver – 12.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg

F DeMarre Carroll – 12.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg

F Paul Millsap – 16.7 ppg, 7.8 rpg

C Al Horford – 15.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg

(2) Cleveland Cavaliers (53-29)

G Iman Shumpert – 8.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg

F LeBron James – 25.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 7.4 apg

F Tristan Thompson – 7.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg

C Timofey Mozgov– 10.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg

What to watch for:

Cleveland's perimeter defense

Atlanta’s offense is predicated on ball movement designed to create open shots from three-point range or driving lanes, both of which could be neutralized with solid defensive rotations. It will be important for Cleveland to stay disciplined on that end of the floor – look for Iman Shumpert and Matthew Dellavedova to see more time on the court because of their defensive prowess.

Jeff Teague’s Production

The Hawks are at their best when Teague is attacking and getting into the paint, creating high-percentage shots for himself and others. His play will be especially important if Irving isn't slowed by his knee and foot injuries, and Atlanta needs him to have another 20+ point, 5+ assist night to neutralize Irving and ensure a victory.

Prediction: Cavs win 98-91

Both teams are hoping to come out and make a statement in Game 1, but the Hawks have yet to show they can be dominant. Atlanta will get a early lead behind the energy of their home crowd, but LeBron and the Cavs will ultimately be too much in the second half.
