Running back Trent Richardson, a former No. 3 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns, has signed a contract with Birmingham of the Alliance of American Football.
Richardson rushed for 950 yards as an NFL rookie in 2012 after starring for the University of Alabama.
But he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick the following year, and last played in the NFL in 2014.
Richardson, 28, had been playing with Saskatchewan of the CFL, but was released earlier this month to allow him to join the AAF.
The AAF is a new, eight-team league that is scheduled to begin play in February.
