To no surprise, opening day in Cleveland brought crowds of white people downtown eager to express their right to wear a racist caricature of Native Americans. Despite Major League Baseball’s conclusion, reportedly shared by the Indians organization, that Chief Wahoo is “no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball,” the symbol was all over the streets and in the stands at Progressive Field, as well as on the uniforms of the baseball team itself, where it will remain, absurdly, through the end of the 2018 season. This came along with other proud demonstrations of the white man’s right to appropriate and mock Native history and culture.
The Cleveland Indians remain a national disgrace
