Not hiring Bruce Arians one of Browns' biggest post-'99 mistakes

BEREA, Ohio — Bruce Arians might well sit atop the Cleveland Browns' lengthy list of “could have beens” since 1999.

Arians revealed Wednesday that he once had an interview set up to coach the Browns, but on the day of the interview he learned that the team had hired Eric Mangini.

He didn’t learn through the team, mind you.

He learned from the media.

At the time, Arians was the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Owner Randy Lerner had reached out to Arians, but before he could meet with Arians he met with Mangini and became smitten.
