That quote from Spanish-born American philosopher George Santayana was top of mind Saturday afternoon after the Cleveland Browns selected quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Under most circumstances, a fifth-round selection is a bit of an afterthought, as roughly only 15 percent of players chosen that late in the draft become starters. Teams generally can move on from players drafted in the lower rounds with little fuss during their annual roster churn.
